Apple TV Format Support
This page brings Zuno’s Apple TV playback into one place: which video, HDR, and audio formats play directly from your Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby server, and what actually reaches your TV and receiver. Zuno includes its own playback engine, so it aims to play your files exactly as they are, without asking your server to convert them first.
“Direct Play” below means the original stream is sent untouched. Where a format needs matching hardware, Zuno delivers it when the whole chain supports it and falls back gracefully otherwise. To confirm what’s happening on any title, open Stats for Nerds from the player.

Modern codecs use the Apple TV’s hardware decoding where it’s available; anything it can’t decode in hardware falls back to software so the file still plays.

Immersive and lossless audio need a compatible TV or receiver and, in most living rooms, an eARC connection between the two. When the chain can’t carry the original, Zuno plays the best standard surround or stereo track instead of dropping sound. Each track in the Audio Track menu lists its format and channel layout so you can pick the one that suits your setup.
When Apple TV can’t play something directly
Section titled “When Apple TV can’t play something directly”If the Apple TV genuinely can’t decode a file, or a remote connection can’t carry the full bitrate, your server can transcode it to a compatible stream so playback keeps working. Transcoding lowers quality and drops advanced HDR and immersive audio on that stream. You control this under Streaming & Quality.
